Four Rules of Motherhood that Nobody Talks About

This article first appeared on The Perspective
They say there is no greater joy in life than becoming a mother. I don't know how you feel about it.  Motherhood is such a wonderful gift that nobody is able to fully express their emotion. I hold this school of thought that, children bring a new character and dimension into our lives not just joy.

Motherhood is most of the time self-taught. No matter how many parenting classes you attend, you will never learn anything. Besides, we all want to bring up our children differently than everybody else.

Despite how you decide to raise your child, there are some unwritten rules that you must abide with. At times you don't know it but all mothers follow this rules.

1. A mother must be a know it all
Simply put, you need to know how to raise your kids even without prior experience. You must be a jack of all trades and a master of all. A mother is a dictionary, a technician, a teacher, a doctor, a consultant, a musician, a photographer, a lawyer and the list is endless.

Tell me where you get to learn all these. Your kids will bring you all sorts of questions expecting answers and so will people around you. I am that kind of person who asks my mom almost everything come to think of it.

2. Society will always judge mothers
The character and well being of every child is pegged on the mother. When things go well the child will be praised but when the opposite happens all fingers are on the mother.

No matter what you do as a mother you are judge somewhere. How unfortunate considering how much mothers sacrifice for their kids.

3.Mothers have no social life
Once you become a mother your life becomes your child. In all their milestones in life you need to make it outstanding. You need to record and share them with your relatives. Not forgetting you need to create a social life for your child and get them friends.

Your friends and relatives also help kill your existence. They stop checking on you and they shift attention to your baby.  Every where you go or whatever you do as a mom, your children come first.

You probably never thought about it. I urge you to go easy on mums who share their kids achievements on social media. That is their life and it is their right just as you do.

4. A mother is not allowed to get sick
When I was growing up I never saw any day my mom was down with something even a flu. Day in day out, she took care of our family and when we fell ill rushed us to hospital. When we were all down with chickenpox she nursed us back to health. Not a day in my childhood did I see any of us nursing her to health.

I do not know if she ever fell ill because she had no room to be ill. A mother is expected to always be on duty just as a scout or soldier.

Lets take time to appreciate our mothers. They are in the only profession with no sick leave, vacation or retirement. God bless you Mum.
