The Kids are Watching

The Kids are watching,
I said to him, but he did not care.
He did whatever he felt like,
The presence of the children never mattered.

He came home drunk,
The kids are watching, I said.
He insulted me daily,
The kids are watching, I said.

He brought over guests at midnight,
The kids are watching I said.
He hit me with no mercy,
The kids are watching, I said.

He left us with nothing to eat,
The kids are watching I said.
He came home with his dinner,
The kids are watching, I said.

He went away for days,
The kids are watching, I said.
He neglected his responsibilities,
The kids are watching, I said.

One day the kids stop watching,
they started acting.
He came drunk, they kicked him out,
He hit me, they hit him back.

There was no more respect for him,
Every word and act was received with resistance.
My home was no more a home.
The kids were no longer watching but acting.
